The commercial cleaning industry strides towards a common goal, i.e. to keep workplaces cleaner and healthier.

Be it medical offices, corporate buildings or warehouses, how neat and clean they keep their carpets speak a lot about their work standards. Although, they understand the importance of carpet cleaning; they cannot decide which is the best carpet cleaning method – steam cleaning or dry cleaning.

They often face difficulty making the right choice for their business. To help shoo away the confusion, we asked the experts of carpet cleaning in Tauranga.

Read on to know the pros and cons of both the methods.

Dry Carpet Cleaning

Dry cleaning requires the use of specialised equipment to clean carpets. Due to the word “dry”, some people think no water or moisture is used for cleaning. But that’s not entirely true!

Although dry chemical compounds are used in much more volume than water, a little moisture is needed in the form of application solutions, to remove the chemicals.

Process – First, powdered cleaning compounds are sprayed on the carpet. Once the chemicals seep inside the carpet’s fibre and break apart the stubborn stains and spills, some amount of water is sprayed to further breakdown the particles. And lastly, the carpet is vacuumed thoroughly to get rid of the particles and chemicals.

Pros of Dry Cleaning

  • Dry cleaning takes less time. Which means you can put the carpets to use as soon as the cleaning is done. That said, many business owners go for dry carpet cleaning because they cannot put their business operations on hold.
  • Since dry cleaning uses chemicals and application solutions, it leaves behind a spotlessly clean carpet. The harsh chemicals effectively remove the most stubborn stains and spills.

Cons of Dry Cleaning

  • Dry cleaning uses much more rigorous chemicals than steam cleaning. So, if people working in your building have allergies or respiratory conditions, their health can be severely affected during the cleaning process. Therefore, it is advised to consult the cleaning professionals whether they use safe and green chemicals and cleaning supplies or not.

Steam Carpet Cleaning

Also known as hot water extraction cleaning, steam cleaning also has a misleading name. Most people believe that professionals use steam for the process. However, that’s not true!

The process involves chemicals used along with water to obtain an unsoiled, unstained, unspotted carpet.

Process – The steam cleaning machine sprays chemicals and hot water on the rug. The hot water further activates the detergent to work their magic. Then, a wet vacuum is used to suck up the remaining water.

Pros of Steam Cleaning

  • Experts say it’s the best deep-cleaning method. Since it combines hot water with chemicals, it cleans the carpet of the dust, dirt and soil particles that have seeped inside the carpet’s fibre.
  • The process is useful for dealing with stubborn stains and spills. Not just that! It also eliminates the allergens, air pollutants, pet hair and pests that have settled down.

Cons of Steam Cleaning

  • Just like dry cleaning, steam cleaning also involves the use of chemicals, but they are not as abrasive. But still, you must ask the professionals to use only safe and green chemicals.
  • Another disadvantage of steam cleaning is that if too much water is allowed to sit on the carpet for long or the extraction process is inadequate, it can cause mould and mildew to grow in the carpet. However, if you hire professionals for the task, this problem will not arise.
  • It is a time-consuming cleaning process. Which means the carpet would not be ready to use immediately after the cleaning. It usually takes almost 12-24 hours for the carpet to dry properly. But if you invest in professional carpet cleaning, the drying time can be speeded up.

Since steam cleaning means longer wait time, business owners get it done over the weekend or after working hours.
